Response to Deseret News Editorial
You can read the editorial by John Florez here.
Here is a copy of my email to him:
"Mr. Florez,
While I appreciate your commentary it seems it was largely based on misinformation that has been distributed through the media regarding this issue.
First I want to clarify that there is no proposal before the Draper City Council specifically regarding Deseret Industries. In fact, Deseret Industries currently has no pending applications with the city. What is under consideration is a proposed ordinance specifying compatible zones for large second-hand retailers in response to continued interest in our community. As Draper continues to grow it is important for us to proactively plan for future commercial and residential developments. It’s one of the fundamental functions of local government.
It’s unfortunate that the media has chosen to portray Draper as anti-DI which could not be further from the truth. Deseret Industries would make a welcome addition to our community if they decide to come here and would provide convenient access for our residents who want to shop, donate or volunteer there.
Regardless of what decision the City Council makes on the pending land use ordinance I am sure the Council will balance the needs of second-hand retailers, Draper residents and the business community as it continues its deliberations on this issue.
Please refer to the press release from Draper City at http://www.draper.ut.us.

Jeff Stenquist

Jeff...
You I couldn't agree with you more. The "media" is a business and their business is to sell spin so that while we watch the "news" we see their advertisers. The problem all started as a reaction to a maybe, I doubt the author realized the repercussions. Hopefully a more forward looking strategy will be employed in the future. Keep up the good work.
